Kabul-Afghanistan: Today, the General Assembly of the High Peace Council, in its regular meeting, supported the recommendations of the Traditional Loya Jirga and pledged to implement them all to the extent possible.
At the beginning of the meeting chaired by Maulavi Abdul Hakim Mujahid, first deputy of the High Peace Council, members of the High Peace Council prayed for the soul of the Peace Martyr Professor Burhanudin Rabbani, the ex-chairman of the High Peace Council and other martyrs in Afghanistan. The General Assembly admired late Professor Burhanudin Rabban’s tireless efforts to bringing lasting peace and security to Afghanistan. Based on the Traditional Loya Jirga recommendations, the General Assembly insisted on thorough investigation of the martyrdom of Prof. Burhanudin Rabbani. They stressed the point in case the investigation doesn’t proceeds well the High Peace Council will ask the International Community assistance into the investigation.
The gathering of the High Peace Council was the first General Assembly meeting held after the martyrdom of the HPC chairman.
Maulavi Abdul Hakim Mujahid said in regards to Prof. Burhanudin Rabbani’s effort to advance the peace process: “ Today we feel the absence of Prof. Burhanudin Rabbani among us. It was a real lost, but the objective we are supposed to achieve is highly valuable, for which the High Peace Council’s chairman sacrificed his life. Late Prof. Burhanudin Rabbani was always emphasize on point that the road leading to peace is filled with a lot of challenges and problems which require utmost secrefices, but still he was determined to cope with the challenges. Thus we are to follow in this path with facing the challenges”.
The meeting considered the recommendations of the Traditional Loya Jirga important and effective methods to strengthen national sovereignty and bring lasting peace and stability to Afghanistan.
After the plenary session, the members of the High Peace Council were divided into four groups to discuss new approaches on the issues of negotiation and reconciliation, communication, outreach and mobilizing Afghans, structural adjustments of the High Peace Council at the national level, financial and administration procedures, and regional and international outreach of the High Peace Council in order to implement the Loya Jirga’s recommendations.
The High Peace Council stressed on the continuity of the International Community’s support for the peace process led by Afghans, since peace and security not benefit the whole region not just Afghanistan.
By taking this opportunity, the General Assembly called on the nations and international organizations participating at the Bonn Conference to support the peace process in Afghanistan by keeping in mind the ground realities in Afghanistan and region. It asked the participants of the Bonn Conference to put more pressure on the neighboring countries to help Afghanistan advance and make progress the peace process.
At the end of the meeting a committee was assigned to prepare a comprehensive concept paper and plan based on the recommendations of the working groups to be submitted to the upcoming General Assembly meeting, in order to take concrete measures based on the agreed plan.
